Laksa Johor

by Woo Lai Yin
(Dubai)

Dear Nazlina,

I was looking for a good recipe for laksa Johor (my favourite laksa) and I stumbled upon your blog. I have to tell you I'm in LOVE with your blog...mainly because of the beautiful songs that you put in it! Brings back lots of good memories...I love all the songs you put in...you have fabulous taste! Ning Baizura, Sheila Majid,... oh, I couldn't help but leave your blog on my pc the whole day just to listen to the songs!

I also enjoyed reading about you :) I'm from Melaka (but not a nyonya) and I also love to read and have a passion for cooking!

I've been living abroad in Dubai for about 4 years now. If I have a craving for any Malaysian food (laksa, nasi lemak,...), I have to pandai2 masak sendiri. In Dubai, you just have to 'diy' these dishes as it's scarcely available here. There are a couple of restaurants here that serve Malaysian fare but the quality tak boleh compare to the ones we get back home :(

I've cooked laksa Johor before with a recipe which I found online. Unfortunately, I've lost it so today, I had to look for a good one again as I'm entertaining a few good friends to brunch on Sunday. I find your recipe to be very good, so I'll give it a try. I don't have asam gelugor here. Didn't stock up on this ingredient when I balik kampung during the summer holidays :( It's not available in stores here, either. Do you think the laksa will not taste right without the asam gelugor? Wish me luck!

Kind Regards,
Lai Yin

My mom laksa is the best!
by: Johorian

Hi,

My mom laksa is the best in Malaysia (at least that what I thought..huhuhu..)

I didn't memorize the recipe but my mom said that to make a perfect gravy is to use Ikan tongkol.

Laksa without asam gelugor
by: Nazlina

Dear Lai Yin,

thanks for your entry in my blog. I am glad you enjoy the content here.

FYI, asam gelugor makes the laksa taste like laksa :-) hahaha.. my advise is, to try find any ethnic Malay food store in Dubai.. I am sure you would be able to find it.

Anyway, for substitute, can also use tamarind juice.. or lime/lemon juice.

I know what it's like to be away from Malaysia and craving our delicious local food.

Have fun cooking up a storm in Dubai.

best wishes,
Nazlina
